The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s is the first ultrabook from Lenovo. It is an intelligently designed Ultrabook with a quick CPU. It’s lightweight and maintains the same wafer-like thickness from front to back. It has a fast processor and a unique book-like shape. And while its screen has limited viewing angles and there's no slot for your memory card, the long battery life and quick performance could make it the ultrabook for you.

The dual-core i5-2677M processor in this ultra thin ultrabook runs at speeds up to 2.9GHz and is powerful enough to run video editing software and some moderately graphics-intensive video games such as World of Warcraft. It comes with the Intel GMA HD 3000 integrated graphics chip. While gaming isn't going to be a strong point for any integrated graphics chip, colors are clear and even videos that were in-game cut sequences looked crisp.

The problem with viewing videos on this ultrabook doesn't reside in the processor, but the display. The color scheme is bright and crisp and the screen is a glossy 13.3 inches of viewing space, but you can expect the viewing angles to be limited to sitting directly in front of the screen. It does have an HDMI port so you can plug it into the TV and view your media on a bigger screen.

Lenovo decided to run with a standard shape and design with their U300s ultrabook. It's a different route than many products in its class, which are more wedge shaped. The U300s maintains a thickness of 0.6 inches and weighs just 3 pounds. According to Lenovo, the design is supposed to resemble a book. It definitely feels as sturdy as one.

Any Lenovo is known for its unique keyboard, but this one falls short. The keyboard on the U300s isn't backlit or spill resistant. The Tab, Caps Lock, Shift and Backspace buttons are all a little small as well. Still, the buttons are well spaced and cushy so you don't have to pound on the keys when you are typing.

One standout feature with this ultrathin laptop is the OneKey Recovery program for backing up data and restoring your computer if something goes terribly wrong. It is user-friendly and will take you step by step through the process. The startup screen shows you the specifications of the laptop, which gives you 256GB of storage on an SSD, which is above industry standards right now. Battery life is just below seven hours when doing general web surfing.

Lenovo has a chat feature for receiving help from company representatives. It almost seems as if there is always someone on there as we were able to chat with someone late at night and early in the morning. You can also visit a few of their FAQs and online forums, or just give them a call and wait a while to talk to an associate.

Summary:

Whether you want a stylish, clementine-orange color, or the metallic-grey finish, the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s is a great ultrabook. It does lack the a few simple features such as an SD slot, bigger keys and a wider viewing angle with higher resolution. But the IdeaPad gets many things right. Nearly seven hours of run time on one charge, solid design and a quick processor make this ultrabook hard to pass up.
